1,000 students discuss international issues at MUNSA XVII
On Jan. 9, more than 1,000 high school students convened for the 17th annual Model United Nations San Antonio conference hosted by the International School of the Americas (ISA), an NEISD magnet school.
The three-day conference took place on Trinity University’s campus and welcomed delegates from across the United States and Mexico. The simulation, put on entirely by students from ISA, incorporated 350 of its 450 students. NEISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian G. Gottardy was among the distinguished guests who spoke at the Opening Ceremonies. Out of the 30 schools that participated, four NEISD high schools attended: Lee, Roosevelt, Reagan, and Johnson. Roosevelt won best small school delegation, and Reagan won best large school delegation.
MUNSA is a Model United Nations conference where students participate as delegates from foreign countries to debate international issues and create resolutions. This year, delegates debated topics in 20 different committees, including the World Health Organization, Security Council, Human Rights Committee, UN Women, and International Court of Justice. In its seventeenth year, MUNSA has become one of the largest student-run MUN simulations in the country. This year’s conference title was “Metamorphosis,” supporting the theme of sustainable development.
“With the idea that the world and its resources are constantly changing, we must prepare for a sustainable future in order to meet the needs of future generations,” said ISA senior Isabella Olea, Secretary-General of the conference.
In addition to the conference theme, MUNSA chooses a non-profit organization to raise funds as part of its humanitarian effort. This year, MUNSA participants and staff raised $5,000 for buildOn, an organization that builds schools in developing nations.
