cibolo green hosts green school symposium
DATE:
Oct. 10
TIME: 8 am - 5 pm
LOCATION: Cibolo Green ES, 24315 Bulverde Green
The U.S. Green Building Council Central Texas – Balcones Chapter will conduct its Fourth Annual Green School Symposium at Cibolo Green Elementary School on Oct. 10, 2011.
Attendees at this event work in or on green schools in Texas – from teachers to administrators, facility managers to construction managers, school designers to landscape architects. This is a unique opportunity to bring all of these parties together, discuss the emerging technologies in their respective fields, learn how to foster dialogue between all school project stakeholders, and fuel you with ideas to apply at your own local school.
Background:
Started in fall of 2007, the Green School Symposium has grown to become a regionally recognized event for educators, administrators, facility managers, architects, contractors and the like. This year’s event includes four individual tracks of interest complete with breakout sessions and an anticipated attendance rate of 250 people.
This year’s topics include High Performance Green Schools, Landscape as a Learning Tool, Mass Walls for Schools, Energy Modeling and Integrating with BIM, Wall and Roof Detailing to Maximize Indoor Environmental Quality, LEED for Schools Panel Discussion, Indoor Environmental Quality for Schools, and Sites Initiative.
Loryn Windwehen from NEISD's Harris Middle School will be speaking on her Green Team and their school gardens. As a seventh-grade science teacher, Windwehen does more than lab work to give her students experiences for a lifetime. Some of their class time is actually spent outdoors – outdoors in their class garden each day. Many of the students never grew plants or worked with soil and don’t have the resources at home to do so. In May, Windwehen was congratulated by close to 300 of her fellow educators and honored with the North East ISD 2012 Teacher of the Year for her outstanding efforts. In her session, she will review the steps and process she followed to successfully incorporate a school garden into her middle school science curriculum.
