Churchill holds canned food drive
This fall, Churchill High School held its annual canned food drive to benefit the San Antonio Food Bank. Through their third-period classes, students were challenged to donate non perishable food items to help San Antonio meet the goal of one million pounds of food donations. The classes in turn competed to see which one would donate the most items.
The top three winning classes received a pizza party sponsored by Parliament.
Students collected a total of 827 non perishable food items. Mrs. Ortega’s class with 172 cans, Mrs. Robbins with 165 cans, and Mrs. Looger with 83 cans.
"What a way to give to our community. Thank you to our wonderful student body!" said Rebecca Hering, Parliament sponsor.
In addition to collecting cans during the school day, students were asked to bring in cans to their Homecoming Round Two. After the school's original homecoming was canceled due to a bomb threat, many members of the community pitched in to make sure the students had the opportunity to celebrate their homecoming. Since they received such generous community support, they decided that they would "Pay it Forward" by asking all students attending the homecoming dance to bring non perishable canned food.
After all items were collected, the school ultimately donated 1,631 lbs. of food to the San Antonio Food Bank!
