ACE graduation, 100+ earn diploma in spring ceremony

North East ISD’s nationally-recognized and non-traditional Academy of Creative Education (ACE) High School held its Spring Graduation Ceremony on Friday, June 8.

More than 100 Academy graduates, families, staff, and Advisory Corporate Council Members, and NEISD administrators, counselors, teachers, and support staff were in attendance. The ceremony was led by Dr. Mary Jo McLaughlin, founding principal of the Academy. A keynote speech was delivered by 1997 ACE graduate and San Antonio Bridge Club of San Antonio Business Manager Susan Pigott Johnson. This commencement marks 15 years since Johnson graduated from ACE. She reflected on what ACE meant to her then and now.

Graduation is a time of celebration and a testament of ACE students who struggled in a traditional school setting and overcame numerous challenges to obtain their high school diploma. Since its inception in 1991, more than 4,200 students have graduated from ACE.

Each graduate crossed the stage to receive his/her diploma. Excerpts from student testimonials were presented throughout the ceremony.

Dr. McLaughlin will retire at the end of June after serving as the only principal for ACE’s 21 successful years. She also presented the closing remarks, which included the importance of continuing the Academy’s highly respected legacy.
