School counselors celebrate School Counseling week, feb. 3-7

National School Counseling Week

NEISD school counselors are an integral part of NEISD's total educational program.

At the North East ISD January board meeting, the Board of Trustees designated Feb. 3-7 as National School Counseling Week. Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), National School Counseling Week aims to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do.

“The role of school counselors is critical, as students seek guidance regularly regarding their personal, social, academic and career goals,” said Joy Culpepper, director for guidance services. “Counselors help students understand the importance of making informed, relevant decisions that may impact their future and their college and career readiness.”

Counselors learn to always be one step ahead as they are currently working on pre-registration for 2014-2015 courses. “It is exciting for the students to be planning for their future, and making purposeful decisions with guidance from their counselors,” said Culpepper.

"School counselorswork with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressingstudents’ academic concerns, career awareness in post-secondary options and personal/social skills,” said Kwok-Sze Wong, Ed.D., ASCA executive director. “Comprehensive school counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource forstudents, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success."

More than 32,000 school counselors nationwide will be participating in the week's festivities. Many school counselors will be hosting special events and activities to call attention to the myriad benefits of a comprehensive school counseling program. The 155 school counselors in NEISD are certified, experienced educators with a master's degree in guidance and counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.
