NEISD campuses celebrate Veterans Day
Campuses across the district will hold various activities, spanning from ceremonies to school assemblies to special video announcements, to commemorate Veterans Day 2011. Bradley MS

Bradley Middle School students and staff will honor relatives and active military on Friday, Nov. 11. The ceremony will include a history of Veterans Day and will recognize Veterans and Active Military Members from all branches of the military. In addition, there will also be performances by the award winning Bradley band, choir, and orchestra. The community is invited to show their support for those who have guaranteed our freedoms and the American way of life.

Bush MS

Bush Middle School will honor our country's military by hosting a Veteran's Day Assembly on Friday, Nov. 11. Highlights include readings from student essay winners, a guest speakers, and performances by the Bush Band, Orchestra, and Choir (Combined with the Reagan Kantorei Men). The event will take place in the Bush Cafetorium, starting at 8:30am.

Cibolo Green ES

On Nov. 11, 2011 Cibolo Green Elementary School honored our veterans. The ceremony consisted of students singing patriotic songs and hand-made “Thank You” cards were presented to the veterans in attendance.
The guest speaker was D. Rocky Perez. Mr. Perez, Manager of Warriors to Work – Central .U.S Region for Wounded Warrior Project is a native of Texa.s He spent 13 years in the military, first as an enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served as a Platoon Sergeant, Shop Chief, and Company Jump Liaison all at the rank of sergeant, and then as an officer in the U.S. Army where he served as a Platoon Leader, Executive Officer and Technical Writer.
While deployed in Iraq, he was wounded by an improvised explosive device in 2003. Rocky was the first Wounded Warrior to be hired in the Department of the Army Civil Service for Fort Sam Houston, TX in 2006. He later went to work as a Plans Analyst for the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development & Engineering Center. Rocky resides in San Antonio\, has two young boys attending Cibolo Green, Riel and Antonio, and is married to Imelda.

Clear Spring ES

Clear Spring Elementary School held its annual Veterans Day Celebration on Friday, Nov. 11 at 8 a.m. The entire school gathered in the gym to honor our veterans. The program included a choir performance, a Veterans Day Poem read by two fifth-grade leaders,along with flowers and thank you cards for veterans that are part of the Clear Spring community. More than 30 veterans and their families were in attendance.

Colonial Hills ES

Colonial Hills Elementary honored its Veterans on Friday, November 11, 2011. The Lee High School Color Guard presented the colors and Diana Montemayor, school principal, welcomed all the attendees. The Lee band and the Colonial Hills choir provided entertainment by singing and playing patriotic songs.
After the ceremony, the veterans and their families paraded around the school waving and saluting the students and faculty. The festivities concluded with a reception of refreshments served to all the veterans and their guests. The formal portion of the program was held in the library and was seen by the entire school virtually, in their classrooms. What a wonderful way to honor our veterans!

El Dorado Elementary School invites the community to their annual Veterans Day Celebration on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at 9:45 a.m. in front of the school. The celebration will feature performances by the Wood Middle School Band, the Madison High School ROTC, the Roosevelt High School Patriots, as well as a special guest speaker. Encino Park ES

Encino Park Elementary School students honored its veterans on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011. The day honored all the staff members at Encino Park who have served in the Armed Forces: Michael Ytuarte, Chris Meyer, Susan Loader, Henrietta William and Carolyn Marx.
The Marine Color Guard opened the ceremony with the posting of the colors. Chris Meyer, special education teacher and Retired Air Force Colonel, spoke about his experience in the military and encouraged the children to be appreciative of all those in our community who serve in the military. The students viewed a moving Powerpoint honoring our families who have family members who have served in the military. Throughout the ceremony, the children sang a medley of patriot songs.
The students also participated by decorating a medal for a family member or friend who currently serves or served in the military. The star medals were on display throughout the week. Kindergarten teacher Michael Ytuarte organized Encino Park’s Veteran’s Day Celebration.


Garner MS

Garner Middle School will celebrate Veterans Day by lining the front of the campus with American flags held by NJHS students. We will also host three assemblies by grade level starting at 1 p.m., at 1:50 p.m., and at 2:40 p.m. respectively. The assemblies will be led by our student body with members of the orchestra, choir, and theater department performing patriotic music and explaining the purpose of Veterans Day. Roosevelt High School ROTC students will assist in the presentation of the colors. All veterans are welcome to join us as we celebrate.

Hidden Forest ES

Hidden Forest Elementary will host a Veterans Day 2011 Celebration on Friday, Nov. 11. From 7:30 - 7:50 a.m., we will host a reception in the library for all Veterans and guests. The ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. with the posting of the colors by the Hidden Forest Morning Safety Patrols. The Churchill High School Black Watch Drill Team will perform along with the Hidden Forest students singing patriotic songs and reading tributes to our veterans.

JOhnson HS

The Claudia Taylor “Lady Bird” Johnson High School Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (AJROTC) will recognize Veterans Day, November 11 with the fourth “Remember the Vet” parade. The ceremony will be held on the Johnson’s track and football area at 8 A. M. that morning. The ceremony will be moved to the school’s auditorium if there is inclement weather. The ceremony will be directed by the cadets and will include a history of why we recognize Veterans Day.
Additionally, SFC (R) Wayne Lund, a distinguished combat Vietnam Veteran and member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart will serve as the guest speaker. The parade will include the cadets of the “Exemplify Success – Nothing Less” battalion, the award winning choir, dance, and cheer. The cadets will provide “Buddy Poppies” for all veterans in the audience and make them available to others who want to show their support for our veterans. The community is invited to attend and show their support for those who guaranteed our freedoms and the American way of life.

Lopez Middle School will observe Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 11 at 1:15 p.m. The observance is to thank and honor all those who served in the military and reserves during wartime and peacetime. The program gives students and staff the opportunity to thank all veterans for their service and sacrifice to our national security.
The Lopez band, choir, and orchestra, will perform patriotic music, the Reagan JROTC will be on hand to Post the Colors and perform a tandem drill routine, and the winning Patriot’s Pen essay will be read. The guest speaker will be from Operation Comfort, an organization that provides support to the wounded military (http://www.operationcomfort.org/).
Distinguished guests, the veterans and reservists in the Lopez school community, and guest speaker, will be honored with a short reception in the library prior to the observance.

Staff from the North East Educational Center (NEEC / Central Office) will hold a Veterans Day ceremony on Friday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. The ceremony will include patriotic music, a brief history of Veterans Day, as well as a wreath ceremony during the playing of "Taps." Ralph Cruz of Pupil Personnel and Gina Elliott of Human Resources will jointly lay the wreath at the base of the flag pole.

Northwood ES

Northwood Elementary School will celebrate Veterans Day with breakfast and a ceremony on Friday, Nov. 11 starting at 7:15 a.m. Guest Veterans will be treated to a breakfast at the school. Following breakfast, students and guests will make their way to the school's new gym. A flag folding ceremony will be conducted and a MacArthur High School solo trumpeter will play "Taps." A volunteer from the San Antonio Firefighters will perform both "Amazing Grace" and "America the Beautiful" on bagpipes. A Northwood fourth grader will also read an essay.

Thousand Oaks ES

On Friday, Nov. 11 at 8:30 a.m. in the Thousand Oaks Elementary School cafetorium, students will be honoring active duty military parents and veterans in attendance. Third, fourth and fifth graders have prepared musical selections to perform. In addition, special musical guest Sydney Michelle from Georgetown, TX will sing "I Have A Dream. Sydney is 12 years old and was the inspiration to create Reach for the Topp, a charity organization which benefits families of disabled veterans.
Brian Potts, Reach for the Topp president, will briefly speak about the organization, specifically about Operation American Hero, a charitable program created to benefit injured or disabled Veterans. Students, whose parents served in the military forces, were invited to Wood Middle School this morning for coffee and bagels in honor of their service to the United States of America. Students from the Wood Choir, Theatre Arts, Orchestra and Band serenaded our veterans with military music and poetry. Wood staff members who are veterans also participated in this morning's breakfast as honorees.
