NEISD Coaches and students honored by Express-News
The San Antonio Express-News is honoring the area's best in basketball, soccer, swimming and diving. The following individuals from North East ISD were recognized for their top-notch performances this season.
MacArthur High School’s Mike Barranco was named the Express-News Area Boys Soccer Coach of the Year. In his three seasons as head boys soccer coach, Mike Barranco has a record of 30-27-15.
This season was particularly impressive for Coach Barranco as our Brahma boys competed in the Region IV-5A tournament for the first time since 1996 and advanced to the regional quarterfinals, a feat not accomplished since 2008. In addition to coaching boys soccer, Mike Barranco teaches 11th grade U.S. History.
Kara Stracener of Johnson High School was named the Area Girls Soccer Coach of the Year. The energetic leader guided the Jaguars to their first District 26-5A championship, a record crushing 21 wins, and a trip to the UIL Class 5A State Tournament.
With two seasons under her belt at Johnson, Coach Stracener has a record of 33-11-6. She has truly started a "Tradition of Excellence" in soccer at the 5-year-old school.
Churchill High School's Leslie Vorpahl was named Girls Basketball Player of the Year, Sarah Gibson of Reagan was named Girls Swimmer of the Year and another fellow Rattler, Madison Lamey, was named Girls Diver of the Year.
Numerous student athletes across NEISD made the Express-News Super Teams and All-Area Teams in boys and girls soccer, basketball and swimming and diving.
