What? Lopez Middle School was "yarn Bombed?"
Yes, it is true. Lopez Middle School was “bombed” with yarn. Students learned about a resident Texas Artist Magda Sayeg who started “yarn bombing”. The students loved the idea of yarn bombing and were inspired to yarn bomb the school.
In class the students learned the craft of hand knitting. Each of Melissa Volz's students had their “hand” in the project as each student hand knitted with the end in mind; They get to “yarn bomb” the school. Students knitted yarn and then had the task of “incognito” “yarn bombing” the atrium area of the school.
Once the “yarn bomb” exhibit was up it was fun to see and hear the reactions of the students as they traveled through the glass walkway where the “yarn bombing” was done. Comments such as “Oh, it looks like so much fun”; “It is so cool”; “A cat would love to hang out in here”, "Yarn, yarn, yarn, yarn!"; and “Look at the door handle, how cool is this!”
One young student walked into the art room as the artist were working and said “is this where the yarn bombing is taking place?" We said yes, and she said shhh, I won’t tell anyone. Lopez artists were excited to strike again so in the spirit of the rivalry between the Tejeda Timberwolves and the Lopez Panthers artist “yarn bombed” the gym Lopez Blue and Gold. Spirit is in the air at Lopez, Go Panthers.
