Las Lomas Lions off to roaring start
Although students are temporarily attending two campuses until construction on Las Lomas Elementary School is completed, Lion Pride could not be stronger! Students, staff and parents have truly synergized to make opening of the new school not only successful, but joyful!
At Las Lomas, they are “educating through innovative technology to empower lifelong leaders and global stewards.” In order to put this vision into action, Las Lomas teachers spent much of the summer in staff development preparing for the exciting opportunities the new school community will present.
As a “school of the future,” Las Lomas students will have access to innovative technologies including iPads, multi-touch SMARTboards, and laptops in every classroom. Las Lomas teachers received two weeks of training this summer and are excited to implement these technologies to improve communication, critical thinking and collaboration in our classrooms. As a “Leader in Me” school, our leadership team received training in Stephen M.R. Covey’s The Speed of Trust and all staff members received training in the 7 Habits. Lions are keeping Data Notebooks, setting goals, and applying for leadership jobs in their classrooms and throughout our school.
Las Lomas is also piloting the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program during the 2012-2013 school year. The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is designed to improve peer relations and make schools safer, more positive places for students to learn and develop.
Las Lomas is looking forward to many exciting opportunities this fall. They received a generous grant from the San Antonio Symphony that will enable the school to take its second through fifth grade students to two performances at Trinity University this year. They will attend the first performance in October. This year’s Young People’s Concert Series will connect to History and Geography. After-school clubs will begin in October. Opportunities include chess club, robotics club, global environmental club, LLTV, Drama Club, Poster Club and Fishing Club.
Las Lomas would like to thank its host campuses, Canyon Ridge and Stone Oak elementary schools, for welcoming Las Lomas staff and students during their temporary stay. The Lions are enjoying being part of the Coyote and Bobcat packs!
